EDUCATION:

Primarily self-taught my influences range from Georgia O’Keefe, Casper David Frederick, Edward

Hopper, Gerhard Richter, and Monet. I have painted as a non-degree student at the San Francisco Art

Institute ( SFAI ) studying under Professors Jeremy Morgan, Dave Tangney and Carlos Via from 1994

through 2000.

Joseph C. Blanchette’s work arises from an almost “Coltrane-istic” desire to explore the transcendental

using the confines of the existing formalisms of representationalism and structure to seek out “Le Vraiment

Beau” or the true and the beautiful which he believes “is” the felt perception of the transcendental within

the conventional.

STATEMENT:

“I wish to reaffirm the meaning of beauty, which has become maligned or obscured. My work is a minimalistic

representation, communicating the relationship between the transcendental and the ordinary not available in the

various dogmas of abstraction or conventional realist styles. I intend to the Transcendentalist view that any scene

is a profound mystery existing as the mundane. Using formalism, and an intuitive chromatic scale, the visually

ephemeral and inconsequential is revealed as a moment of experiential wonderment. Beauty, by Art or by Nature,

has the capacity to awaken the feeling of awe, and awe is the emotional and bodily perception of the underlying

Mystery of this ordinary experience.
